“My work with the chimpanzees has emphasized that, while genetic inheritance clearly plays a major role in shaping an individual’s behavior, the nature of early experience is also critical. A young chimpanzee who has a disturbed upbringing, a harsh, nonsupportive mother or caretaker, no opportunity to form close bonds with an individual who can be trusted, is likely to be insecure and to find it difficult to form meaningful relationships with others in adult life.”
